Assembling an IC Engine Valve Model
Let's learn how motion is controlled in an engine by assembling an IC Engine
Valve Model.
What is an IC Engine Valve?
An IC engine valve is a part that controls the flow of fuel and exhaust gases in
an internal combustion engine. The valve opens and closes to let in the fuel and
air needed for combustion and to release the exhaust gases after combustion.
What is a Cam and Follower Mechanism?
A cam and follower mechanism are a system used to turn rotational movement
into back-and-forth (reciprocating) or straight-line (translational) motion. In
an IC engine, this mechanism is responsible for opening and closing the intake
and exhaust valves at the right times.
What is a Cam?
A cam is a rotating part of the mechanism that helps move the follower, which
is another part, by direct contact. The cam’s motion causes the follower to
move in a back-and-forth or up-and-down pattern.
What is a Follower?
A follower is a part that moves based on the motion of the cam. As the cam
rotates, the follower either moves up and down or in a straight line. The follower
converts the cam’s rotating movement into another type of movement, such as
reciprocating or oscillating motion.
