to recognise them. The AI then gains the ability to identify patterns in the data to comprehend the
appearance of each move.
Hand Gesture Recognition in AI
Hand gesture recognition means using a camera or sensor to see and understand the movements of
a hand. AI make this possible by looking at the images or videos of hand movements and figuring out
what each gesture means. For example, an AI system can learn to recognise when someone raises
their hand, makes a peace sign, or forms a fist.
To do this, the AI system needs to be trained using multiple samples of hands with different positions
and angles. Once it has learned from these samples, it can recognise these gestures in real time. This
is quite useful in controlling robots, playing video games, or even turning lights on and off without
touching a switch.
How Does AI Learn to Recognise Hand Gestures?
AI is trained on data to gain knowledge. Images or videos of multiple hand gestures are typically
used as the data for hand gesture recognition. After examining these photos, the AI system attempts
to determine what makes each gesture unique. For every gesture, it then establishes a pattern or
guideline.
For example, if you train AI to recognise a thumb-up, you would show it many images of hands doing
a thumb-up. The AI would learn to recognise that a hand with a thumb pointing up is a “thumb-up”
gesture. Once the AI understands this pattern, it can recognise the gesture in real time.
Google Teachable Machine: A Simple AI Tool
One of the tools that makes it easy to train AI models to recognise hand gestures is Google’s
Teachable Machine. It is an online tool that allows anyone to train a machine learning model without
any coding. It is designed to be simple and user-friendly, making it perfect for individuals.
