What are Hand Gestures?
Hand gestures are the movements we make with our hands to communicate. For example, waving
hello, giving a thumbs up, or showing a peace sign. We use gestures every day to express ourselves
without speaking.
Example: When you’re excited and wave your hands in the air, that is a gesture.
Why Teach AI to Recognize Hand Gestures?
If computers could understand hand gestures, they could be useful in many ways:
1. Games: Play video games by moving your hands - no controller needed!
2. Sign Language: AI could help translate sign language.
3. Smart Homes: Turn on the lights or music by waving your hands.
Example: Imagine playing a game where you control a character by moving your hands. It would
feel like magic!
How AI Learns to Recognize Hand Gestures
To teach AI to recognize hand gestures, we need to get creative. Here’s how:
1. Collecting Data
We show the AI many pictures or videos of different hand gestures so it can learn what each one
looks like.
Example: Take pictures of your friends making gestures like waving or giving a high-five. Each
picture helps the AI understand.
2. Using Different Angles
Just like selfies, gestures look different from different angles. We teach AI to recognize gestures
no matter the angle.
Example: A thumb-up looks different from the front and the side, but the AI needs to know it’s
the same gesture.
3. Making Learning Fun
Turn it into a game where the AI guesses the gesture you’re making. If it gets it right, it earns a
“point.”
Example: Make a gesture, and if the AI guesses correctly, you both celebrate!
4. Testing the AI
Once the AI has learned about hand gestures, we need to test it. We show it new gestures and
see if it can guess them correctly.
Example: Show the AI a wave goodbye. If it recognizes it, great! If not, the AI can learn from its
mistakes.
