Why Do We Use These Components?
Mechanical parts provide strength and movement.
Electronic parts handle decision-making and control, allowing the robot to perform tasks.
Electronic Components
Apart from coding and programming the artificial brain, to create and comprehend machines like
robots, one must understand various fundamental concepts regarding electronics. Here’s a brief
background:
Power Source: Each electronic gadget needs a power source for it to operate be it a battery or
electricity from a socket. Usually, robot requires a DC power source such as a battery.
Charges: Charge can be described as the fundamental characteristic of matter that makes it
influenced physically by the presence of other matter with charge. There are two types of charge,
which are named as positive and negative.
Current: The movement of the electric charge across a certain conductor (in this case, a wire) is
also known as current. current is measured in amperes (A).
Voltage: It is the difference in the electric potential between
two points. It is the work done in moving a charge from one pole
to another through a wire. You can imagine this as the pressure
applied within a water pipeline. Its SI unit is volts (V).
Circuits: A circuit can be described as a pathway with no end, allowing for the movement of
electric current. Robots, in particular, circuits are designed to join parts such as motors and
sensors as well as LEDs to the energy source.
Types of Circuits
Closed Circuit: When the loop is complete, and current flows.
Imagine a switch turned on – the circuit is closed.
Open Circuit: When the loop is broken, and no current flows.
Imagine a switch turned off – the circuit is open.
Breadboards and Basic Components
A breadboard refers to a non-permanent circuit assembly, enabling the construction and testing of
electronic circuits with ease. This makes it ideal for an amateur in electronics. Kicking off an idea
with the help of such electronic elements like wires and circuits is facilitated, even before a solid
version of the idea is created.
Why Use a Breadboard?
No need for soldering, thus components can be utilized again.
Learning circuit diagrams is as easy as it gets, and it is also very safe to try out different designs.
