Subtracting a 1-digit number From a 2-digit number
Example. Subtract 5 from 28.
Solution. We can use a number strip to find the answer.

Find the bigger number, that is 28, on the number strip. Move backwards 5
places, you reach 23.
Thus, 28 - 5 = 23.
We can also use vertical subtraction to find the answer.
Step 1. Subtract the ones. Step 2. Subtract the tens.

Thus, 28 - 5 = 23.
