              Addition or SuBtrACtion

To solve a word problem, we first decide whether to add or subtract. We do

this by carefully looking at the situation in the problem. Then we solve the

              problem accordingly.

Example 1. 62 people are sitting in a hall. 20 more people join them. How

many people are there in all?

Solution. Here, people are joining. When T O

things are put together, we add. 6 2

So, this is an addition problem. + 2 0

                              62 + 20 = 82 8 2

Thus, 82 people are there in the hall now.

Example 2. Siya had 36 ribbons. She gave 12 ribbons to Jiya. How many

              ribbons are left with Siya?

Solution. Here, ribbons are being given away.
When something is given away or removed, T O

              we subtract. 3 6

              So, this is a subtraction problem. – 1 2
                              36 - 12 = 24 2 4

Thus, 24 ribbons are left with Siya.
