A rickshaw has 3 tyres. Here are 4 rickshaws.

How many tyres can you see in all?

                Clearly, 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 tyres

Repeated addition of the same number can be done by multiplication.

We say that, 3 added 4 times is equal to 12.

Or 4 times 3 is equal to 12.

                We write:

                     4 × 3 = 12 read as 4 into 3 is equal to 12.

Or 4 multiplied by 3 is equal to 12.

                ‘×’ stands for multiplication.

                4 × 3 = 12 is a multiplication fact.
