Look at the picture. This is a clock. It tells us the time.
The face of the clock is called its dial.
minute hand
There are twelve numbers (1 to 12)
hour hand
on the dial of a clock. Each number
stands for one hour.
A clock has two hands. The shorter hand is called the hour hand. The longer
hand is called the minute hand.
When the minute hand points to 12, the hour hand shows the time.
In the first clock, the minute hand is at 12 and the hour hand is at 4.
Tips
Always use two dots
(:) to write the time.
So, the time is 4 o’clock or 4:00.
Common Mistake
In the next clock, the minute hand
is at 12 and the hour hand is at 9. 12:00 ( )
1:00 ( )
So, the time is 9 o’clock or 9:00.
