Ranu’s mother bought 7 mangoes. If Ranu took 2 mangoes, how many
mangoes are left? ____________

Subtraction means taking away. The sign of subtraction is '–'. It is called
minus.

There were 7 mangoes.
Ranu took 2 mangoes.
How many are left?

We cross out 2 mangoes to find the answer.

5 mangoes are left.

For subtraction, we first write the bigger number, put the minus sign and
then write the smaller number. The above subtraction can be written as

7 – 2 = 5

We say, seven minus two is equal to five.
