VertiCAl SubtrACtion
Numbers can be subtracted by writing them one below the other. This
method of subtraction is called vertical subtraction. In vertical subtraction,
we write the bigger number on top and the smaller number below.
Let us subtract 4 from 9.
Since 9 > 4, we write the numbers
like this:
T O Draw the lines equal to
bigger number. Cross
9 the lines equal to smaller
– 4 number. Count the
uncrossed number of lines
5 which gives the answer.
Thus, 9 – 4 = 5.
