SubtrACting A 1-digit number from A 2-digit number

Let us subtract 7 from 18.
Step 1. Write the bigger number on top Step 2. Subtract the tens.

and the smaller number below. T O

Subtract the ones.

1 There are no tens in the second
number to subtract.
8 ones – 7 ones = 1 one So, write 1 in the tens place.

Write 1 in the ones place. Thus, 18 – 7 = 11.
