            DIVISION BY EQUAL GROUPING

Division also means grouping the total number of objects into

            equal groups.

Example 1. There are 12 pastries. Mother wants to put 4 pastries

on each plate. How many plates will she need?

Solution. By making groups of 4 pastries each, we see that:

Mother needs 3 plates to put all the pastries.

We can say that 12 divided by 4 is equal to 3. We write it as 12 ÷ 4 = 3.

Example 2. Vidit has 15 crayons. He puts 3 crayons in a holder. How many
holders will he need for all the crayons?

Solution. First, start making groups of 3 crayons as follows:

            Then, put them in holders.

So, Vidit needs 5 holders for all the crayons.
We can say that 15 divided by 3 is equal to 5. We write it as 15 ÷ 3 = 5.
