Comparing Numbers with Different Numbers of Digits

            A 3-digit number is always greater than a 2-digit number and a 1-digit
            number.

            Look at the following:

                   a. b.
                           H T O T O T O H T O

                           1 4 3 > 8 5 7 9 < 2 7 0

                            3-digit 2-digit 2-digit 3-digit
                           number number number number

                        So, 143 > 85. So, 79 < 270.

Comparing Numbers with the Same Number of Digits

If the number of digits in the given numbers is the same, compare their left-

            most digits.

Let us compare 214 and 196.

Both the numbers have 3 digits. Here, we compare the hundreds digits.

                                         H T O > H T O In 3-digit numbers, the

                                         2 1 4 1 9 6 greater the digit in the
                                                         > hundreds place, the

                                         So, 214 > 196 or 196 < 214. greater is the number.

If the digits in the hundreds place are the same, compare the digits in the tens
            place.

Let us compare 134 and 148. Here, 1 is the hundreds digit in both the numbers.
So, we compare their tens digits.

                                         H T O < H T O If the hundreds digits

                                         1 3 4 1 4 8 are the same, the
= greater the digit in the

                                                                                   tens place, the greater
                                                         <
                                                                                   is the number.
                                         So, 134 < 148 or 148 > 134.
