Objects which come in groups of two are called pairs. The following objects
come in pairs.
A pair of socks A pair of shoes A pair of gloves
Here are 8 marbles. We can make pairs
of marbles by taking 2 marbles at a time.
No marble is left unpaired, so 8 is an even
number.
All the numbers that can be put in pairs, that is in groups of 2s, are called
even numbers.
Here are 7 marbles. Can we make pairs of
marbles by taking 2 marbles at a time?
1 marble is left unpaired.
So, 7 is an odd number.
All the numbers that cannot be put in pairs, that is in groups of 2s, are called
odd numbers.
