Example 3. Find the sum of 24 and 8.

Solution.

Step 1. Add the ones and regroup. Step 2. Add the tens.

4 + 8 = 12 ones = 1 ten 2 ones 1 + 2 = 3 tens

Write 2 in the ones place and carry Write 3 in the tens place.
over 1 to the tens column.

So, 24 + 8 = 32.

Example 4. Add 36 and 18.

Solution.

Step 1. Add the ones and regroup. Step 2. Add the tens.

6 + 8 = 14 ones = 1 ten + 4 ones 1 + 3 + 1 = 5 tens

Write 4 in the ones place and carry Write 5 in the tens place.
