Look at the picture given below. There are 10 kites flying in the sky and
each kite has a subtraction problem. Can you solve them? If the answer

is 0, the kite will come down, otherwise it will go up. Find out how many
kites will go up and how many will come down.

                    8 – 7 17 – 4 9 – 9 6 – 4 17 – 10 9 – 6

                                          13 – 13 15 – 15
                                                                     21 – 10
                             16 – 9

Number of kites going up = Number of kites coming down =

            SUBTRACTION FACTS

We know that ‘taking away’ is subtraction.
                                                                               9
The sign of subtraction is ‘–’ (minus). – 6

The answer of subtraction is called the
            difference. 3 Difference

Here, we subtract 6 from 9. Our answer is 3. So, the difference of 9 and 6 is 3.

            Subtracting 0

When we subtract 0 from a number, the difference is the number itself.

              a. 15 – 0 = 15 b. 72 – 0 = 72 c. 26 – 0 = 26
