            SUBTRACTION WITH REGROUPING

Sometimes when we subtract, we need to regroup.
            Subtracting a 1-digit Number from a 2-digit Number

            Example 1. Find 34 – 8.
Solution. We write the greater number above and the smaller number below

according to the place value and then subtract.

Step 1. Since there are not enough Step 2. First subtract the ones and
ones, regroup 1 ten to 10 ones. then the tens.

                   T O T O

                   2 14 2 14

                   3 4 3 4
              – 8 – 8

                                                                          2 6

                                                                    14 – 8 = 6 ones and 2 – 0 = 2 tens

            So, 34 – 8 = 26.

            Example 2. Subtract 6 from 20.

Solution. We write the greater number above and the smaller number below
according to the place value and then subtract.

Step 1. Since there are not enough Step 2. First subtract the ones and
ones, regroup 1 ten to 10 ones. then the tens.

                   T O T O

                   1 10 1 10

                   2 0 2 0
              – 6 – 6

                                                                          1 4

                                                                    10 – 6 = 4 ones and 1 – 0 = 1 ten

            So, 20 – 6 = 14.
