                  Subtracting a 2-digit Number from a 2-digit Number

                  Example 3. Subtract 36 from 52.

                  Solution.

Step 1. Subtract the ones. Step 2. Subtract the tens.

                  Since 2 < 6, borrow 1 ten T O 4 tens are left. T O

                  from 5 tens. 4 12 So, 4 – 3 = 1 ten. 4 12
                  1 ten + 2 ones 5 2 Write 1 in the tens place. 5 2

                    = 10 ones + 2 ones = 12 ones – 3 6 – 3 6

                  Now, 12 – 6 = 6 ones. 6 1 6
Write 6 in the ones place.

                  So, 52 – 36 = 16.
                  Example 4. Find:

                               a. 82 – 38 b. 71 – 39
                  Solution.
                               a. T O b. T O

                                         7 12 6 11 Subtract the

                                         8 2 7 1 ones first, then

                                     – 3 8 – 3 9 subtract the tens.

                                         4 4 3 2

                                   So, 82 – 38 = 44. So, 71 – 39 = 32.
