                PROBLEM SOLVING

Using subtraction to compare two numbers

To compare two numbers, we subtract the smaller number from the larger
                number.

Example 1. Priya has 15 kites, Saransh has 11 kites. Who has more kites? How

                many more?
                Solution.

Priya has 15 kites. Saransh has 11 kites.

                Compare 15 and 11.

                Since 15 > 11, Priya has more kites. T O
                                                                                    1 5
                Now, we find the difference.

                15 – 11 = 4 kites - 1 1

So, Priya has 4 more kites than Saransh. 0 4

Using subtraction to find out what does not belong to a group

Example 2. Priya has 12 kites. 5 are red. How many kites are not red?

                Solution.

                Total number of kites = 12 T O

                Number of red kites = 5 0 12

We find the difference to know the number 1 2
of kites that are not red. - 5
                12 – 5 = 7 kites

So, 7 kites are not red. 7

Using subtraction to solve other problems:

Example 3. There are 62 seats in a bus. 35 people
are sitting in them. How many seats are vacant?

                Solution: T O

                We have: 62 – 35 = 27 seats 5 12
                So, 27 seats are vacant. 6 2

                                                                                      - 3 5

                                                                                          2 7

                                                                                                              57
                                                                                              Subtraction
