COMPARISON OF NUMBERS
We have already learnt how to compare numbers in chapter 1. Same rules
are used to compare bigger numbers.
When the Number of Digits is Different
Example 1. Compare 61 and 426.
Solution. H T O
6 1 2-digit number A 3-digit number is greater
4 2 6 3-digit number than a 2-digit number.
So, 426 > 61 or 61 < 426.
When the Number of Digits is the Same
When each of the given numbers has 3 digits, then compare their hundreds
digits first.
Different digits in the hundreds place
Example 2. Compare 534 and 769.
Solution. H T O H T O For 3-digit numbers, the number
5 3 4 7 6 9 with the greater digit in the
hundreds place is greater.
5 < 7
So, 534 < 769 or 769 > 534.
Same digits in the hundreds place
When the digits in the hundreds place are the same, then compare the digits
in the tens place.
Example 3. Compare 467 and 429.
Solution. H T O H T O For 3-digit numbers, if the
4 6 7 4 2 9 hundreds digits are the same,
then the number with the
4 = 4 greater digit in the tens place is
greater.
6 > 2
So, 467 > 429 or 429 < 467.
