Riddhi makes the following groups.
5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20
Riddhi: I have 4 groups of 5 stamps. How many stamps do I have?
Oh I got it! It is 5 in each group, so let me add:
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 4 groups of 5 make
5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20
Chetan: Well done, now tell me my total. I have 3 groups of 3 stamps.
3 + 3 + 3 = 9
Riddhi: It is 3 + 3 + 3 = 9 or it can be 3 times 3, which is equal to 9.
Chetan: Very good, Riddhi. We can say, "3 groups of 3 make 9."
Riddhi: Now, I have made 9 groups of 4 stamps each.
That is, 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = ________.
There are 9 × 4 = ________ stamps.
We observe that there are an equal number of stamps in each group.
To find the total, repeated addition is used. Repeated addition is called
multiplication. ‘×’ is the sign of multiplication.
