Here we will learn mainly about unit fractions, like fractions and unlike fractions.
Unit Fractions
Fractions which have 1 as the numerator are known as unit fractions.
1 1 1
For example, , , , etc. are unit fractions.
3 4 10
like Fractions
If the denominators of two or more fractions are the same, they are known as like
fractions. Look at the following figures.
2 3 4 5
6 6 6 6
Each figure is the same and is divided into 6 equal parts. The denominators of these
fractions are the same. They are like fractions.
1 2 3 4
Some more examples of like fractions are ,, and .
5 5 5 5
Unlike Fractions
Fractions which do not have the same denominator are known as unlike fractions.
Look at the following figures.
2 4 3 3
4 6 8 10
Each figure is the same and divided into a different number of parts. The denominators
of all these fractions are different. They are unlike fractions.
