Look at the following place value chart.

                    Periods → Thousands Ones

Places → Ten Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
                                                   (TTh) (Th) (H) (T) (O)

The ones period has three places – Ones, Tens and Hundreds.
The thousands period has two places – Thousands and Ten Thousands.

Let us write 51648 in the place value chart and see how it helps in us read the number.

                                    Thousands Ones

Ten Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
                            (TTh) (Th) (H) (T) (O)

                              5 1 6 4 8

All the digits in the same period are read together along with the period’s name,
except ones. Using commas makes it easy to read and write bigger numbers.

Thus, 51,648 is read as fifty-one thousand six hundred forty-eight.

Let us have a look at some more 5-digit numbers.
