We have already learnt the method of comparing numbers up to 4 digits. The rules of
comparison for large numbers are the same.
Comparing Numbers with Different Number of Digits
rule 1. The greater the number of digits, the greater is the number.
example 1. Compare 53,645 and 3,687.
Solution. TTh Th H T O Th H T O
5 3 6 4 5 3 6 8 7
5 digits > 4 digits
Thus, 53,645 > 3,687.
Comparing Numbers with the Same Number of Digits
rule 2. If the number of digits is the same, then we start comparing the digits from
the extreme left. We compare the digits until we find two digits that are different. The
digits that are different are compared to find the larger number.
