So, 2,538 > 2,438. So, 73,464 < 73,477.
Ascending and Descending Orders
Ascending or increasing order means writing numbers from the smallest to the greatest.
example 3. Arrange the following numbers in ascending order:
45,656; 45,352; 45,682; 45,082
Solution. First, we arrange the given numbers in the place value chart and then start
comparing.
TTh Th H T O
45,082 is the smallest number and 45,682 is the greatest number. 4 5 6 5 6
Also, 45,352 is smaller than 45,656. 4 5 3 5 2
So, 45,082 < 45,352 < 45,656 < 45,682. 4 5 6 8 2
Descending or decreasing order means writing numbers from 4 5 0 8 2
the greatest to the smallest.
example 4. Arrange the following numbers in descending order:
2,356; 45,605; 8,956; 67,897
Solution. First, we arrange the given numbers in the place value chart and then start
comparing.
TTh Th H T O
Here, two numbers 45,605 and 67,897 have 5 digits such that
2 3 5 6
67,897 > 45,605 and two numbers 2,356 and 8,956 have 4 digits,
4 5 6 0 5
in which 8,956 > 2,356.
8 9 5 6
So, 67,897 > 45,605 > 8,956 > 2,356.
6 7 8 9 7
