ReAding Time To The exACT minuTe
We use a clock to tell time. The clock has 12 markings on its dial
(marked as 1, 2, 3, ..., 12). These markings are big and show hours.
There are 60 small markings (marked using lines or dots) also on the
dial of a clock to show minutes.
Since 60 minutes ÷ 12 = 5 minutes, the difference between two big
markings is 5 minutes. When the minute hand moves from one small
marking to the next, 1 minute has passed. Similarly, when the minute
hand touches 2, it means 2 × 5 = 10 minutes have passed. The next
marking 3 shows 3 × 5 = 15 minutes. The four small markings (lines or
dots) between 2 and 3 show 11, 12, 13 and 14 minutes respectively.
Here, the minute hand is at the second small marking after 2. It shows
that 2 × 5 + 2 = 12 minutes have passed. The hour hand is between
5 and 6. So, the time is 5:12.
