Kittu is going to her Nani’s house by train.

Looking at the ticket, she was a little surprised.
Do you know why she was surprised?
She was surprised to see the time on it. It
was written as 16:00. She asked her mother,

‘When is it 16 o’clock? There are only 12
numbers on a clock, so how can it be 16?’
Mother: (smiling) The clock with 12 numbers is a 12-hour clock.

Similarly, there is a 24-hour clock which shows the 24 hours of a
day. The time shown on this ticket is based on the 24-hour clock.
            After 12 noon, 1:00 p.m. is counted as 13, 2:00 p.m. as 14 and so on.

            Kittu: Oh, so 16:00 is 4:00 p.m.

Mother: Yes, you are right. Analog clock
            Kittu: So, 8:00 p.m. is 20:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. is 23:00 p.m. and
            12:00 midnight is 24:00 p.m. 20 : 1 1

Mother: Hold on! 24-hour times are neither a.m. nor p.m. They
are expressed by saying ‘hours’. Midnight is represented as 24:00 Digital clock
hours (the end of the day) as well as 00:00 hours (the start of the next day).
