Rule: To convert hours into minutes, we multiply the number
of hours by 60.
Tips
example 2. Convert the following into minutes.

a. 6 hours b. 5 hours 45 minutes We can write

Solution. a. 6 hours = 6 × 60 minutes • h for hours
= 360 minutes • min for minutes
b. 5 hours 45 minutes = 5 hours + 45 minutes • s for seconds
= 5 × 60 minutes + 45 minutes
= 300 minutes + 45 minutes

= 345 minutes

Rule: To convert minutes into seconds, we multiply the
number of minutes by 60.
Tips
example 3. Convert the following into seconds.
a. 9 minutes b. 3 minutes 30 seconds ‘Second’ is the smallest

Solution. a. 9 minutes = 9 × 60 seconds unit of time.
= 540 seconds
b. 3 minutes 30 seconds = 3 × 60 seconds + 30 seconds

= 180 seconds + 30 seconds
= 210 seconds
