rounding to the Nearest 10
To round a number to the nearest 10, first find the two tens between which the given
number lies. Then, choose the ten which is nearer to the given number.
example 1. Round 54 to the nearest 10.
Solution.
50 51 52 53 54 55 56 57 58 59 60
54 lies between 50 and 60 but it is closer to 50.
So, 54 rounds to 50.
example 2. Round 675 to the nearest 10.
Solution.
670 671 672 673 674 675 676 677 678 679 680
675 lies exactly between 670 and 680.
So, 675 rounds to 680.
If a number is exactly between the two tens, it is always rounded to the higher ten.
example 3. Round 247 to the nearest 10.
Solution.
240 241 242 243 244 245 246 247 248 249 250
247 lies between 240 and 250 but it is closer to 250.
So, 247 rounds to 250.
rounding to the Nearest 100
To round a number to the nearest 100, first find the two hundreds between which the
given number lies. Then, choose the hundred which is nearer to the given number.
example 4. Round 167 to the nearest 100.
167
Solution.
100 110 120 130 140 150 160 170 180 190 200
167 lies between 100 and 200 but it is closer to 200.
So, 167 rounds to 200.
example 5. Round 346 to the nearest 100.
346
Solution.
300 310 320 330 340 350 360 370 380 390 400
346 lies between 300 and 400 but it is closer to 300.
So, 346 rounds to 300.
