Division can be checked using the following relation:
Quotient (Q) × Divisor + Remainder (R) = Dividend
example. Divide 52 by 6 and check your division.
Solution. By using the long division method:
8 Quotient (Q)
Divisor 6 5 2 Dividend The remainder
– 4 8 must be less than
the divisor.
4 Remainder (R)
Checking: Quotient (Q) × Divisor + Remainder (R) = Dividend
8 × 6 + 4 = 52
The answer is the same
48 + 4 = 52 as the dividend. Therefore,
52 = 52 the division is correct.
