                DiviSion by A 1-Digit DiviSor

                example 1. Divide 943 by 5. 1 8 8 Q
                Solution. 5 9 4 3

                Step 1. Start dividing from the highest place. Since 9 > 5, divide 9 by 5. – 5
From the multiplication table, we have:
                                                                                                           4 4
                                               1 × 5 = 5, 2 × 5 = 10 – 4 0

10 > 9 > 5. So, write 1 in the hundreds place of the quotient
                                                                                                              4 3
                          and 5 below 9. – 4 0
                Step 2. Subtract 5 from 9 which gives 9 – 5 = 4. 3 R
Step 3. Bring down 4 next to 4. The new dividend is 44.

                          Again, 8 × 5 = 40, 9 × 5 = 45
                          45 > 44 > 40. So, write 8 in the tens place of the quotient and 40 below 44.

                Step 4. Subtract 40 from 44. We have 44 – 40 = 4.
Step 5. Bring down 3 next to 4. We get the dividend 43.

                          Divide 43 by 5. The result is 8 with a remainder of 3. 1 8 8
                          So, quotient = 188, remainder = 3. × 5

                Checking: Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend 9 4 0
                                        188 × 5 + 3 = 943 + 3
Therefore, the division is correct. 9 4 3

                example 2. Divide 456 by 6.
                Solution.

                Step 1. As 4 < 6, start with 45 as the dividend. 7 6 Q
From the multiplication table, we have: 6 4 5 6
                                               7 × 6 = 42, 8 × 6 = 48 – 4 2
48 > 45 > 42. So, write 7 in the tens place of the quotient and
                          42 below 45. 3 6

                Step 2. Subtract 42 from 45. This gives 45 – 42 = 3. – 3 6
Step 3. Bring down 6 just to the right side of 3. Now, the dividend 0 R
                          becomes 36.

                          Again, 6 × 6 = 36
Step 4. Write 36 below 36 and subtract.
                                           36 – 36 = 0
                          So, quotient = 76, remainder = 0.

                Checking: Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend 7 6
                                         76 × 6 + 0 = 456 × 6

Therefore, the division is correct. 4 5 6

                                                                                                              63
                                                                                                 Division
