Checking: Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend
8 × 17 + 9 = 145
136 + 9 = 145
Therefore, the division is correct.
example 5. Divide 556 by 36.
Solution.
Step 1. 5 < 36, so divide 55 by 36.
Here, 36 goes 1 time (1 × 36 = 36) into 55 with a remainder 1 5 Q
of 19. Put 1 in the tens place of the quotient and bring down
the next digit 6 alongside the remainder 19, making it 196. 36 5 5 6
Step 2. Divide 196 by 36. Here, 36 goes 5 times (5 x 36 = 180) into – 3 6
196 with a remainder of 16. Put 5 in the ones place of the 1 9 6
quotient. – 1 8 0
So, Q = 15, R = 16. 1 6 R
Checking: Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend
15 × 36 + 16 = 556
540 + 16 = 556
Therefore, the division is correct.
