            Addition and Subtraction of Mixed Fractions

            To add or subtract mixed fractions, first convert them into improper fractions. Then
            add or subtract the like fractions as usual. Express the answer in the simplest form and

            as a mixed fraction, if required.

                                               1
            Example 3. Sushma used 2 L of milk in the morning
                                              8
                    5
            and 3 L in the evening. How much milk did she use
                    8

            in total?

                           1         5
            Solution. 2 and 3 are mixed fractions.
                           8         8
            First, convert these fractions into improper fractions as:

                                                         ×+
                           ×+
                     1    82      1   17          5    83       5    29
                    2 =             =     and  3 =                =
                     8        8        8          8        8         8
                                                               17       29
            Now, the improper and like fractions are and .
                                                               8         8
            So,  17  +  29  = 17 + 29  =  46
                  8     8        8        8

                  46     46 ÷  2    23      3
            and       =          =     =  5
                   8      8 ÷ 2      4      4

                                       3
            Thus, Sushma used 5 L of milk in total.
                                       4

                                              5                                    2
            Example 4. Rachna had 3 dozen bananas. She used 1 dozen bananas to make
                                              6                                    6
            a fruit salad. How many bananas was she left with?

                          5         2
            Solution. 3 and 1 are mixed fractions.
                          6         6

            First, convert these fractions into improper fractions as:

                                                    ×+
               5     63×+    5    23          2    61     2    8
              3 =              =       and 1 =              =
               6         6         6          6       6        6

                                                               23        8
            Now, the improper and like fractions are and .
                                                               6         6
