Warm Up The Phases of the Moon
The phases of the moon refer to the different appearances of the Moon as seen
from Earth, resulting from its orbit around our planet. There are eight distinct
phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon,
waning gibbous, third (last) quarter, and waning crescent. This cycle, known as
1
the lunar month, takes approximately 29 days to complete. It occurs because
2
the amount of the moon's sunlit surface visible from Earth changes as the moon
revolves around the Earth.
