Some other units of Length
In our daily life, we use several other units to measure length. The commonly used units
for measuring height and distance include inches, feet, yards and miles.
Conversion: 1 inch = 2 cm 5 mm
1 foot = 12 inches
1 yard = 3 feet
1 mile = 1 km 600 m
Example 4. Convert:
a. 3 inches into mm b. 12 feet into inches
c. 5 feet 7 inches into inches d. 3 feet into cm
Solution. a. 3 inches = 3 × (2 cm 5 mm) = 6 cm 15 mm
= 6 × 10 mm + 15 mm
= 60 mm + 15 mm = 75 mm
b. 12 feet = 12 × 12 inches = 144 inches
c. 5 feet 7 inches = 5 × 12 inches + 7 inches
= 60 inches + 7 inches = 67 inches
d. 3 feet = 3 × 12 inches = 36 inches
= 36 × (2 cm 5 mm) = 72 cm 180 mm = 72 cm + 18 cm = 90 cm
