Example 1. Add 15 kg 500 g, 21 kg 340 g and 5 kg 250 g. kg g
Solution. 1 5 5 0 0
Method 1. We write the given weights one below the other in 2 1 3 4 0
such a way that the same units are placed in the + 5 2 5 0
same column (kg under kg, g under g, etc.) and then 4 2 0 9 0
add as usual.
Thus, the answer is 42 kg 90 g.
Method 2. Convert the weights into grams and add them. 1 5 5 0 0 g
15 kg 500 g = 15000 + 500 = 15500 g 2 1 3 4 0 g
21 kg 340 g = 21000 + 340 = 21340 g + 5 2 5 0 g
5 kg 250 g = 5000 + 250 = 5250 g 4 2 0 9 0 g
Thus, the answer is 42090 g = 42000 g + 90 g = 42 kg 90 g.
