Example 2. Subtract 18 kg 25 g from 27 kg.
Solution. We can subtract weights in the same way as we subtract lengths.
Method 1 Method 2
Put zeros if
kg g there is no 2 7 0 0 0 g
2 7 0 0 0 value in grams. - 1 8 0 2 5 g
- 1 8 0 2 5 8 9 7 5 g
8 9 7 5
Thus, the answer is 8 kg 975 g or 8975 g.
Example 3. Multiply 12 kg 250 g by 24. Express the answer in kg.
Solution. 12 kg 250 g × 24 = 12 kg × 24 + 250 g × 24
= 288 kg + 6000 g
= 288 kg + 6 kg = 294 kg
Thus, the answer is 294 kg.
Example 4. Divide 120 kg 580 g by 10. Express the answer in kg and g.
Solution. 120 kg 580 g ÷ 10
= (120 ÷ 10) kg + (580 ÷ 10) g
= 12 kg + 58 g
= 12 kg 58 g
Thus, the answer is 12 kg 58 g.
