example 4. The area of a rectangle is 1800 sq. cm and its length is 60 cm. Find its
                breadth.

Solution. Given, area of the rectangle = 1800 sq. cm
                and length = 60 cm

                                                  Area 1800
                Breadth of the rectangle = = = 30 cm
                                                Length 60

Hence, the breadth of the rectangle is 30 cm.

                example 5. The floor of a room measures 10 m by 8 m.
Akhilesh wants to pave the floor with tiles. If 1 sq. m of tile
costs `250, what is the total cost of paving the floor?

Solution. Length of the floor = 10 m

                Breadth of the floor = 8 m

Area of the floor = Length × Breadth
                                     = 10 m × 8 m = 80 sq. m

                 The cost of tiling 1 sq. m = `250

                The cost of tiling 80 sq. m = `250 × 80 = `20,000.

                Area of a Square

In the given figure, ABCD is a square. We know that a square is

a rectangle whose length and breadth are equal.
                                                                                                                      (l)
Area of a square = (Side × Side)

                That is, A = l × l sq. units (l)

example 6. Find the area of a square whose length is 12 cm.

Solution. Length of a side of the square = 12 cm
Area of the square = Side × Side

                                                                   = 12 cm × 12 cm

                                                                 = 144 sq. cm

example 7. Find the area of a square whose perimeter is 84 cm.

Solution. Perimeter of the square = 84 cm
                Side of the square = (84 ÷ 4) cm = 21 cm

                Area of the square = Side × Side = (21 × 21) sq. cm = 441 sq. cm

Hence, the area of the square is 441 sq. cm.
