              b. Payal bought some ice cream and walked to give it to Tanmay at his house.
How much distance did she cover?
                    Payal covered 3 km 400 m.

              c. Which child's house is at the shortest distance from the ice cream parlour?
Swati's house is at the shortest distance from the ice cream parlour.

            Components of a Map

A title, keys, directions and a scale are components of a map. Let us study them one

            by one.

            Title

It gives the subject of a map, that is, what information the map contains.

            Scale

The scale of a map shows the relationship between the distance on a map and
the corresponding actual distance. Places on a map are shown by reducing the
actual distances. Using the scale we can find the actual distance on the ground
by measuring the distance on the map.

For example, suppose 1 cm on the map equals 10 km on the ground. If we measure a

distance of 4 cm between two places on the map, it means the actual distance
between those places on the ground is 40 km.
The scale on the map is written as: Scale: 1 cm = 10 km

Example. Use a scale to measure the distance between India Gate and the Red Fort

            shown below.

Solution. Here, the distance between India Gate and the Red Fort is 8 cm.

            The scale is 1 cm = 750 m.

So, the actual distance between India Gate and the Red Fort is
                                         8 × 750 m = 6000 m = 6 km.
