Look at the time shown by the following 12-hour and 24-hour clocks.

                                     3:00 a.m. = 03:00 hours 20:10 hours = 8:10 p.m.

                                     3:00 p.m. = 15:00 hours

In the 24-hour clock format, we use four digits to show the time. The first two digits
from the left show the hours and the last two digits from the left show the minutes. A
day starts at 12 midnight, written as 00:00 hours. After 24 hours, the day ends at 12

midnight, which can also be written as 24:00 hours or 00:00 hours of the next day.

Conversion of 24-hour Clock Time to 12-hour Clock Time

The following table shows how time in the 24-hour clock format is converted to the
                12-hour clock format.

                                         rule examples

If the number formed by the first two digits a. 05:24 hours = 5:24 a.m.
                  from the left of a 24-hour clock time is less b. 08:40 hours = 8:40 a.m.
than 12, then it shows the hours before noon, c. 11:59 hours = 11:59 a.m.
therefore, a.m. is used with it.

                  If the time in 24-hour clock lies between 12 a. 12:01 hours = 12:01 p.m.
                  hours and 13 hours, then in 12-hour clock, the b. 12:37 hours = 12:37 p.m.
                  time is written with p.m. keeping 12 at the c. 12:59 hours = 12:59 p.m.
                  hours place.

If the number formed by the first two digits a. 13:00 hours = 1:00 p.m.
                  from the left of a 24-hour clock time is 13 b. 15:45 hours = 3:45 p.m.
or more, then the difference between that c. 23:59 hours = 11:59 p.m.
number and 12 gives the hour and p.m. is
                  used with it. d. 24:00/00:00 hours = 12:00 midnight

example 1. Write the following time in the 12-hour clock format.
                              a. 14:26 hours b. 08:05 hours c. 12:00 hours

                              d. 16:09 hours e. 00:35 hours
                Solution. a. 14:26 hours = 2:26 p.m. b. 08:05 hours = 8:05 a.m.

                              c. 12:00 hours = 12 noon d. 16:09 hours = 4:09 p.m.

                              e. 00:35 hours = 12:35 a.m.
(For times from 00:00 or 24:00 hours to 00:59 hours, add 12:00, and write a.m.)
