Minutes
A minute is a bigger unit than a second. Minutes measure
longer actions like brushing teeth, walking to school, reading
a story, making a phone call, etc.
Understanding both seconds and minutes helps us measure
time accurately in everyday activities, sports and learning.
Other units of time bigger than seconds and minutes are hours, days, weeks, etc.
The relationship between different units of time is given below. It will help you
understand their conversion.
1 minute = 60 seconds 1 month = 30 days
1 hour = 60 minutes 1 year = 12 months
1 day = 24 hours 1 year = 365 days
1 week = 7 days 1 leap year = 366 days
Conversion of higher units into lower units
To convert higher units of time into lower units, we use
multiplication. Keep in Mind
example 1. Convert: 1 fortnight = 2 weeks
a. 18 minutes into seconds = 14 days
b. 9 minutes 25 seconds into seconds
c. 3 hours 36 minutes 16 seconds into seconds
Solution. a. 1 minute = 60 seconds
18 minutes = (18 × 60) seconds = 1080 seconds
b. 9 minutes 25 seconds = 9 minutes + 25 seconds
= (9 × 60) seconds + 25 seconds
= 540 seconds + 25 seconds = 565 seconds
c. 3 hours 36 minutes 16 seconds
= 3 hours + 36 minutes + 16 seconds
= (3 × 60) minutes + 36 minutes + 16 seconds [Since 1 hour = 60 minutes]
= (180 minutes + 36 minutes) + 16 seconds
= 216 minutes + 16 seconds = (216 × 60) seconds + 16 seconds
= 12960 seconds + 16 seconds = 12976 seconds
