To perform addition or subtraction of time, we arrange the same units
of time in the same columns and then add or subtract. Tips
example 1. Add:
a. 7 hours 34 minutes + 9 hours 47 minutes We use ‘h’ for ‘hours’,
‘min’ for ‘minutes’, ‘s’ for
b. 26 minutes 48 seconds + 13 minutes 56 seconds seconds when writing
units of time in short.
Solution.
a. Step 1. Add minutes: 34 + 47 = 81 min
81 min = (60 + 21) min
= 60 min + 21 min = 1 h 21 min
Step 2. Add hours: 1 + 7 + 9 = 17 hours
Thus, 7 hours 34 minutes + 9 hours 47 minutes = 17 hours 21 minutes.
