Rounding off to the Nearest 100
To round off a number to the nearest 100, follow these steps.
Step 1. Look at the tens digit of the given number.
Step 2. If the tens digit is less than 5, replace the tens and ones digits by 0 and keep
the other digits as they are.
Step 3. If the tens digit is 5 or more, increase the hundreds digit by 1 and replace the
tens and ones digits by 0, keeping the other digits as they are.
Examples: a. 1,729 → 1,700 b. 5,587 → 5,600 c. 19,614 → 19,600
Rounding off to the Nearest 1000
To round off a number to the nearest 1000, follow these steps.
Step 1. Look at the hundreds digit of the given number.
Step 2. If the hundreds digit is less than 5, replace the hundreds, tens and ones digits
by 0 and keep the other digits as they are.
Step 3. If the hundreds digit is 5 or more, increase the thousands digit by 1 and
replace the digits on its right by 0.
Examples: a. 8,375 → 8,000 b. 20,684 → 21,000 c. 22,540 → 23,000
example 1. Round off each of the following numbers to the nearest 10.
a. 6,84,659 b. 12,68,573
Solution. a. In 6,84,659, the digit in the ones place is 9, which is greater than 5. So,
we increase the digit in the tens place by 1.
Thus, 6,84,659 becomes 6,84,660.
b. In 12,68,573, the digit in the ones place is 3, which is less than 5.
Thus, 12,68,573 becomes 12,68,570.
example 2. Round off each of the following numbers to the nearest 100.
a. 18,49,357 b. 32,67,493
Solution. a. In 18,49,357, the digit in the tens place is 5. So, we increase the
hundreds digit by 1.
Thus, 18,49,357 becomes 18,49,400.
b. In 32,67,493, the digit in the tens place is 9, which is greater than 5.
Thus, 32,67,493 becomes 32,67,500.
