The class teacher asked the students about their favourite flowers and instructed

Priya, the head girl, to record their responses. She listed the responses as given
               below.

Rose Rose Lily Rose Aster Rose Rose

Tulip Aster Tulip Rose Rose Lily Lily

Aster Aster Aster Rose Lily Lily Tulip
Tulip Rose Rose Aster Lily Rose Aster

Now, Priya wants to represent this information in a table. Can you help her?

                              Favourite flowers Number of students
                                      Rose

                                       Lily

                                      Aster
                                      Tulip

                                      Total

                   1. How many students chose Tulip as their favourite flower? __________

                 2. Which flower is liked by fewer students: Lily or Aster? __________

                 3. Which flower is the most popular among the students? __________
The teacher explains that such activities help us learn data handling.

Data handling means collecting, organising and using information so that we can

understand it easily. In simple words, when we gather information (data), arrange
it in a table or chart, and then study it to find answers or patterns, the entire
               process is called data handling.

            PiCTogrAPh

A pictograph is a pictorial representation of data using images, icons or symbols.

Every symbol represents a specific value or category. Gathering and understanding
data becomes easier with pictographs. They provide a simple and clear way to

represent information. All icons in the pictograph must be of the same size, but we
can use a fraction of an icon to show the respective fractional value.
