Suppose you want to represent the number of books read by four students in a month
using a pictograph. The data for the same is given below:
Students Student A Student B Student C Student D
Number of Books 4 8 6 10
The above information can be easily represented by a pictograph.
Students Number of Books
Student A
Student B
Student C
Student D
Key: Each represents 2 books
Example. A survey was conducted among 40 children by a pizza supply group to find
out which pizza is the most popular. The results are as follows:
Flavour Number of Children
Cheese
Pepperoni
Margherita
Capsicum
Key: Each represents 4 children
Can you identify the most popular flavour by observing the above table?
Solution. If 1 complete pizza symbol represents 4 children, then half a pizza symbol
1 1
represents × 4 = 2 children, a one-quarter pizza symbol represents × 4 = 1 child,
2 4
3
and a three-quarters pizza symbol represents × = 3 children.
4
4
Now, the number of children who like cheese pizzas = 3 × 4 + 3 = 15
The number of children who like pepperoni pizzas = 2 × 4 + 1 = 9
The number of children who like margherita pizzas = 2 × 4 + 3 = 11
The number of children who like capsicum pizzas = 1 × 4 + 1 = 5
Thus, the most popular pizza is the cheese pizza.
