Bar graph
reading a Bar graph
We know that a collection of information in the form of numbers is called numerical
data. When the numerical data is represented using rectangular bars of different
heights, it is called a bar graph. In a bar graph, the bars are of equal width and have
equal spaces between them. A bar graph has:
i. a title ii. horizontal and vertical axes iii. labels on both the axes
Example 1. The bar graph given alongside shows Cars of different brands sold in a month
the number of cars of different brands sold by Y Scale: On vertical axis, 1 unit = 2 cars
a dealer in a particular month. Read the graph
carefully and answer the following questions:
a. How many cars of brand D were sold?
b. How many cars of brand B were sold?
c. Which car brand had the maximum
sales?
d. Which car brand had the minimum
sales?
e. How many cars were sold in the month? X
Solution.
a. 14 cars b. 10 cars c. Brand C d. Brand B
e. 16 + 10 + 22 + 14 + 18 = 80 cars
Drawing a Bar graph
We should keep the following points in mind, while drawing a bar graph.
1. The title of the graph should be written at the top.
2. The items represented along horizontal and vertical lines should be labelled
along the lines.
3. A convenient and clear scale should be used.
4. Bars of equal width should be drawn with equal gaps between them.
5. Bars should be shaded or coloured.
