Look at the following circle graph
(pie chart). It shows the favourite
                sports of various students.
                    • The biggest portion shows
                       that the most students like
                       cricket.

                    • Football and athletics are
                       liked by almost the same
                       number of students.
                    • Formula 1 is liked by fewer
                       students and wrestling is
liked by the least number of
                       students.

Example. The following data shows the number of students who gave responses

                about their favourite pizza toppings.
Toppings Cheese Tomato Onion Capsicum Olive

                        Number of students 12 3 3 6 24

Represent the data in a circle graph.

Solution. The total number of students is 48. To show the data in the circle graph, fol-
                low these steps.

Step 1. Find the fraction of students that like each topping as given in the following

                          table.

Topping Cheese Tomato Onion Capsicum Olive

                        Number of Students 12 3 3 6 24

                        Fraction 12 1 3 1 3 1 6 1 24 1

                                                    48  =  4      48  =  16     48  =  16      48  =  8      48  =  2

Step 2. Draw a circle with a suitable radius and colour it

                          according to the fractions:
                                1
For , colour one-fourth of the circle red.
                               4
                                1
For , colour one-sixteenth of the circle blue.
                               16
                                            1
For the other , colour one-sixteenth of the circle yellow.
                                           16

                                                                                                             251
                                                                                             Data Handling
