example 4. Subtract 352014 from 714369 and check your answer.

            Solution. Check:

                                 L TTh Th H T O L TTh Th H T O

                                 6 11 1

                                 7 1 4 3 6 9 3 6 2 3 5 5
                            – 3 5 2 0 1 4 + 3 5 2 0 1 4

                                 3 6 2 3 5 5 7 1 4 3 6 9

                                                                                                   Tips

To check the subtraction, add the difference to the subtrahend
and see if the sum is equal to the minuend.

example 5. A factory produced 535798 toys in the year 2024 and 785995 toys in the

year 2025. Find the increase in the production of toys.

            Solution. 8 18 15
                  Number of toys produced in 2025 = 7 8 5 9 9 5

                  Number of toys produced in 2024 = – 5 3 5 7 9 8
                  Increase in production of toys = 2 5 0 1 9 7

Thus, the increase in the production of toys in 2025 is 250197.

example 6. In an examination, 19543 students passed. Out of these, 3580 got an A

grade, 9500 got a B and the remaining got a C. How many students got a C grade?

            Solution. 1 1

                 Number of students who got an A = 3 5 8 0
                 Number of students who got a B = + 9 5 0 0

                 Total number of students who got an A or a B = 1 3 0 8 0

                                                                                                  4 14
                   Total number of students who passed the exam = 1 9 5 4 3

                   Number of students who got an A or a B = – 1 3 0 8 0
                   Number of students who got a C. = 0 6 4 6 3

            Thus, 6463 students got a C grade.
