Though addition and subtraction are two different operations, they are interlinked.
Look at the following explanation.
a. 46 + 21 = 67 then 67 – 21 = 43 or 67 – 46 = 21
b. 921 – 137 = 784 then 784 + 137 = 921 or 921 – 784 = 137
c. 9021 – 4567 = 4454 then 4454 + 4567 = 9021 or 9021 – 4454 = 4567
Let us see some problems to understand the facts more clearly.
1. What should be added to 155 to get 270?
Here, the question is what number when added to 155 gives 270?
Think about it in the reverse direction.
What should be subtracted from 270 to get 155?
This can be done by subtracting 155 from 270.
270 – 155 = 115
Hence, 115 + 155 = 270.
2. What should be subtracted from 9710 to get 4570?
This can be understood as:
9710 – _____ = 4570
Can we get the answer by subtracting 4570 from 9710?
Obviously, 9710 – 4570 = 5140 is the correct answer.
