Random Access Memory (RAM)
RAM is a temporary memory that loses its data
when the computer is turned off. This is why it is
known as volatile memory. It temporarily stores
the data and instructions given by the user, as well
as the results produced by the computer.
Types of RAM:
There are two types of RAM:
1. Dynamic RAM (DRAM): It needs a constant supply of power to keep the stored
data refreshed.
2. Static RAM (SRAM): It also needs a continuous power supply to maintain the
data, but unlike DRAM, it does not require constant refreshing.
However, SRAM is much faster and consumes less power compared to DRAM.
Read-only Memory (ROM)
ROM is a type of permanent memory, also called
non-volatile memory. It keeps data even when the computer
is turned off. ROM stores the essential instructions needed
to start up the computer.
If you have a magical computer that can store all your favourite things
in special boxes, how would you label these boxes to remember
your best memories, like your favourite games or school projects?
Secondary Memory
Secondary memory is a type of permanent memory where the computer keeps
things for a long time. Data stored in secondary memory can be retrieved later
when required.
Secondary memory devices are also called secondary storage devices. They are
categorised into three types:
